Gifted Education Program

The purpose of gifted education is to provide programs and services that meet the unique cognitive, social, and emotional needs of gifted students, preparing them to succeed in a global society.

Florida legislation has identified gifted learners as a part of the exceptional student education population since 1968. In Florida, students are eligible for exceptional education programs if they meet the criteria outlined in Florida Board of Education Rule 6A-6.03019, FAC. These criteria focus on a learner's need for the gifted education program, general intellectual functioning, and various behavioral and intellectual characteristics. Gifted students come from all backgrounds with special abilities ranging across a wide spectrum of achievement. These students require special provisions to meet their educational needs and are a part of the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) department.  All OCPS students are screened in spring of second grade and others by referral to the staffing specialist.  Gifted services at Westpointe are delivered in a cluster classroom within each grade level.
